About Waitomo Scenic Reserve

Waitomo Scenic Reserve

Waitomo Scenic Reserve, located in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island, is a protected area famous for its network of limestone caves, underground rivers, and glowworm habitats. The reserve covers a lush, forested landscape marked by rolling hills and rugged karst terrain shaped by millions of years of limestone erosion. It was established to preserve the unique geological features and native flora and fauna of the area. The caves, formed through the gradual dissolution of rock by water, host one of the world's most abundant displays of Arachnocampa luminosa, bioluminescent glowworms endemic to New Zealand. Visitors experience guided tours through caves such as the famous Waitomo Glowworm Cave, Ruakuri Cave, and Aranui Cave, where boat rides and walking tours showcase the ethereal glowworm light displays. Apart from caving, the reserve offers walking tracks along the forest floor, providing opportunities for birdwatching and appreciating native plants like ferns and podocarps. Historically, the caves were significant to local Māori iwi, serving as sites of cultural importance and shelter. Today, the reserve balances tourism with conservation, emphasizing sustainable visitor practices. Waitomo Scenic Reserve remains a compelling destination for outdoor enthusiasts, geology students, and photographers eager to witness one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary natural phenomena.
